Overview
Remote Terminal Units are the interface between physical infrastructure and the digital control room — across electric substations, water and wastewater facilities, and gas compressor and regulator stations. They collect measurements, execute control commands, and communicate status to SCADA — making their correct configuration foundational to both operational reliability and cybersecurity. Yet RTUs are frequently misconfigured, running outdated firmware, collecting incorrect data, and maintaining communication pathways that serve no current operational purpose. GridIntel’s RTU Configuration service uses VigilantGrid’s OT device visibility to find these problems and fix them systematically.
The cost of a misconfigured RTU is often invisible until it is not. A measurement point mapped to the wrong scaling factor causes operators to see feeder load that appears normal while the actual load is dangerous. A control point with incorrect addressing executes the wrong switching operation when a command is issued. A stale communication path set up for contractor remote access and never closed provides an attacker’s entry directly into the control network. VigilantGrid identifies these issues by monitoring RTU communication behavior against expected configuration — flagging deviations before they cause incidents.
What’s included
✓Complete RTU inventory and configuration audit using VigilantGrid OT network discovery and device profiling
✓DNP3 application layer configuration review: data object mapping, event classification, and integrity poll settings
✓Modbus register map verification against SCADA historian tag list for measurement accuracy confirmation
✓Communication pathway audit: active, dormant, and unauthorized connections identified and documented per RTU
✓Firmware version assessment across the RTU fleet with vulnerability evaluation against current CVE database
✓Security hardening: removal of unused protocols, default credential elimination, and unnecessary port closure
✓Configuration backup implementation with change detection and automated alert integration to VigilantGrid
✓NERC CIP-007 and CIP-010 compliance documentation with organized evidence packages for audit submission
